Millions of commuters use public transportation and spend hours in airports across the country every day. Though this “downtime” offers significant opportunities for mobile subscribers to conduct business or communicate with others, in most situations mobile usage is not available due to lack of wireless coverage and capacity in these types of venues.

Many facilities do not have an airport-wide, centrally-managed infrastructure with the required technologies and bandwidth to support applications today. In addition, mobile telephone and public safety wireless coverage is spotty, with dead spots and poor reception plaguing certain parts of the facilities. Although some mobile carriers have deployed their own in-building wireless distribution systems to boost their signals, other carriers have relied on nearby outdoor cell towers.
When mobile carriers can provide reliable wireless coverage to their customers in these kinds of facilities, it allows them to generate additional revenue from the increased minutes of use and keep their customers satisfied, resulting in reduced subscriber churn. ADC’s FlexWave Base Station System (BSS) provides a capacity and coverage solution for the unique requirements of airports, train stations, and subway platforms - with their high-traffic areas, large open spaces and long, narrow corridors. Utilizing a FlexWave BSS combined with an InterReach Distributed Antenna System (DAS), mobile carriers can address both hotspot and hole-fill needs.
Coverage and capacity in tunnels and subways can be easily addressed with the FlexWave Universal Radio Head (URH). This solution is built to withstand harsh environments with high and low temperatures, moisture, and is immune to contaminants such as brake dust and exhaust. The URH’s digital transport technology also accommodates long fiber spans, and, with an optical budget range of up to 26dB, can often utilize existing dark fiber.
For cruise ships and other maritime vessels, ADC features the UltraWAVE System which provides on-board voice and data services. For large vessels, this solution is commonly paired with one of the InterReach DAS systems to distribute the capacity throughout the long corridors and between deck levels.
